Stanhope Forbes 1857-1947 is considered to be the founding father of the Newlyn School, an artistic community based in south Cornwall at the end of the 19th Century and the early 20th Century.  He spent his early life in London and attended Dulwich College before studying at Lambeth College of Art and the Royal Academy.  After some time in Ireland and France, he married his wife Elizabeth, also an artist, in 1889 and they settled in Penzance, where Forbes painted "en plein air" mainly landscapes and snapshots of local life.
